Unique Tradition in Banyuwangi

Actually there are few tribe beside Osing Tribe who live in banyuwangi, Madura Tribe, Bugis Tribe, Bali Tribe, and Osing Tribe is a Unique native people who live in Banyuwangi since it formed, most of them are spreading around region and usually called “Wong Blambangan”

Osing Tribe Has a Own Language

Each tribe usually has their own language, it’s same as Osing Tribe, during the activities they use it to interact with other people, also called Anceint Javanesse Language, or Osing Language. There are two  branch, first Osing Language (daily Language) and Goko-krama (Soft/Polite Language). The phonology of language many use diphthong “ai” for example "geni" read as "genai".

Mepe Kasur Tradition by Osing Tribe

Mepe kasur’ (Laundry a Bed), usually held at month of Dzulhijjah together with village festival. In this tradition symbolize that Osing tribe could keep the harmony and spirit of working in the household. Bed color (Red and Black) symbolize of harmony in family and refusing disaster.

To meet with Osing tribe you can visit to Desa adat Kemiren in Banyuwangi. But they are spreading too in Banyuwangi, and not hard to find, also they are friendly and kind to foreigners.

Gandrung Dance

Words "gandrung" is defined as fascination of Blambangan agrarian society to Dewi Sri as the goddess of rice that brought prosperity to the community, gandrung Banyuwangi art dance performed as a public manifestation of gratitude every finish harvest. Clothes for dancers almost the same as Bali art dance because it has closeness to Bali tribe.

Seblang

Seblang is one Osing public ritual that can only be found in two villages within the districts Glagah, Banyuwangi, namely, the village Bakungan and Olehsari. This ritual is carried out for the purposes of the village clean and refusing disaster, so the village remains in a safe and peaceful. This ritual is the same as ritual Sintren in Cirebon and Trance in Bali. The dancers choosen with supernatural by the local shaman, and usually the dancers must be selected from the descendants of previous Seblang dancers. Clothes for the dancer usually use several vegetables and fruit. Seblang dance is actually a very old tradition, it was difficult to track the origin of it.

Barong Kemiren

Barong is a symbol of togetherness. Because barong words comes from Osing which means together or togetherness and Barong also use for refusing disaster and sacred things in society. Every ritual in Banyuwangi usually put barong to the list. According to Hasan Singodimayan local culture, "Art barong barong Kemiren similar to that existing in Bali. The difference is barong bali physically larger and do not have wings while Kemiren barong small and have wings. "In addition to its unique art barong Kemiren also has a high cultural value for Banyuwangi and Indonesia.

Kebo keboan is a buffalo imitation in local language, become a symbol because buffalo and  farmers are partners and buffalo also the main support of living for the majority of the villagers. it's a unique tradition in the village celebrations and a expression of gratitude for the abundant harvest ceremony as well as clean village, that all citizens are given the prosperity and kept away from all dangers and disasters. This Ritual is regularly held once every year.

Banyuwangi Batik's

One of the best souvenir when you visit Banyuwangi is Batik. There are two types of batik in this Blambangan region, namely Batik Elephant Oling and Kangkung Setingkes. Oling elephant motif has a strong philosophy. it means elephant is a big animal, while Oling mean remember. Thus, Elephant Oling means remember the almighty, while Kangkung Setingkes have a sense of unity.

Batik Banyuwangi are commonly used as shirts, scarves, udeng, and gloves but for now most people use it as a shirt. the difference between other Batik in other region is only in batik motifs.

5 Authentic and Delicious Food in Banyuwangi

1. Sego Cawuk

Sego cawuk come from the people's habbit while eating, they directly use hand to eat. the way of eat like that named “cawuk”. Sego Cawuk usually add with Pindang sauce with Gendam style. this way of cooking only exist in Banyuwangi, pindang sauce with gendam style will produce sweet and clear. Beside, you can add aditional menu such as pelasan or fish pepes, kikil, dendeng, and also egg. Sego Cawuk usually enjoy at breakfast time in the morning.

2. Rujak Soto

Rujak Soto is a type of food fusion between two different culinary, namely salad and Soto, this meal consists of a variety of different vegetables, tofu, rice cakes, and tempeh are mixed with peanut sauce, and then poured with soto soup containing cowhide or babat and chili. The combination of these two culinary produce a distinctive taste and unique at this culinary one.

3. Sego Tempong

The menu is served with various vegetables, such as cassava leaves, cucumber, beans, eggplant, etc. With a side dish of tofu, fried tempeh, salted fish, corn fritters, warm rice and distinctive chili. the food is perfect for you who fan of spicy food, because it is really hot. as the name implies, Sego Tempong consists of two words, namely sego which means rice and Tempong mean slap in the face. This can be defined make you feel slapped once because of the super spicy flavour.

4. Pecel Pitik

The food menu is distinctive from Banyuwangi, named pecel pitik derived from materials grated coconut, mixed with beans that have been mashed. The beans that have been roasted was mixed again with a variety of spices, spicy seasoning mix with a little coconut water to allow the flavors to infuse. materials are then presented with “pitik”  in Indonesian called chicken. Pitik burned first so that the meat is tender. And pitik which used is young chicken about 8 months old.

5. Ayam Pedes

Spicy chicken is chicken cooked with a sauce spiced with coconut flavored with spices, plus chili left intact. at a glance like a chicken curry but a milky white color, not yellow, because it uses coconut milk without turmeric. As the name implies, Hot Chicken dominant spicy flavor  and it's very strong. Spicy food lovers will get a challenge from this super spicy dishes.
